Why I'm Running

Meet Kayla

Why I love Distrct 11!

My love for Denver’s heartbeat runs strong.

Kayla Greathouse is a Montbello native and a proud Montbello Warrior. Ms. Greathouse is a single mother, a renter, a union member, and a proud resident of Denver’s heartbeat, District 11.

She knows what it is like to use most of your paycheck to cover rent, to receive public benefits, and live paycheck to paycheck. Having experienced it all, she also knows what it is like to feel that the people in power do not represent you, that they are out of touch, that they ignore you, and that they do not care about what goes on with everyday people.

Some of Kayla’s favorite memories took place in this community. Juneteenth on Peoria Street was an event she always looked forward to in the summer. Juneteenth on the 5 Points was amazing for her to experience as well! Watching the Montbello Falcons play football at Falcon Park was always a favorite pastime. of Kayla’s as she would see her fellow classmates on the field.  These things gave Kayla a strong sense of community.

Kayla has worked in this community as a TSA screener at Denver International Airport, as a Disaster Recovery Specialist with the Small Business Administration, and now as a service worker for RTD. Public service is her passion. She was a part of a group of people who testified to get Wyatts Towing closed down for illegally towing cars in low-income housing projects. At all hours of the night, Kayla would keep watch and alert her neighbors, and sometimes physically stop the tow truck driver from towing her neighbors’ cars.  She made brochures about why Denver needed more affordable housing units and what was adequate and safe for people to live in, and distributed them to lawmakers at the state capitol. Kayla spoke to the Denver Post about housing affordability and the Colorado Sun about Black Maternal Health. Kayla has also spoken to the Denver City Council about affordable housing, saying no to Small Nuclear Reactors in our neighborhood, and the quality of life in our city. Kayla cares about this District and the people and families in it.

Kayla will address the overstauration of liquor stores, gas stations, fast spots (chicken places in particular), and Starbucks coffee shops that have taken over our neighborhood. Kayla will address the lack of grocery stores in this area and the lack of entertainment spots and places for our children and youth to have fun.
